Ralph B. and Emma Everett came to Houston, Texas from Atlanta, Georgia in 1909. In 1911 they started R.B. Everett & Company at 3118 Harrisburg just outside of downtown. At the time Mr. Everett founded the company, construction equipment had only been acquired from manufacturers located in the north. Houston was then a sprawling town on an estimated 16 square miles of land with a population of 78,000. Mules and horses were the chief power units on grading and excavating work and hand labor was the backbone of all construction work. The few crude items of power machinery available were steam driven while gasoline engines were few and far between. Likewise the needs of contractors were few; so making a success of this new type of representative business was hard sledding.
But with dogged persistence and continuous hard work, even through the Great Depression of the thirties and a devastating fire in 1946, the company not only survived but grew steadily to be a key supplier of construction equipment to users in at least 40 counties of Southeast Texas. The December 1946 fire completely gutted the company headquarters building, eating quickly through wooden walls and partitions and igniting the wooden roof. As President, Hal M. Davis said after the disastrous fire: “We continued on a ‘fresh air’ basis through 1947 while a new fireproof building was erected on the same site with sprinkler system, air conditioning, and overhead crane.”
From 1911-1918, Ralph and Emma Everett ran the business as a proprietorship. In an unfortunate turn of events, Ralph would die during the flu epidemic at the young age of 28 years old. The company was incorporated in 1919 and Clarence Neblett was President from 1919 – 1941; Emma B. Neblett (formerly Mrs. Emma Everett) served as President from 1941 – 1963; Hal M. Davis served as President from 1963 – 1977; J. Farrel Henderson began his tenure as President in 1977 and remains in that position today.
Other executives who made major contributions to the companys growth and success include Hal M. Davis who served as President until 1977, died in 1978; Robert B. Turner who served as Vice-President and Treasurer until his death in 1965, and William (Lew) Grote, who served as Vice-President and Secretary until his death in 1972.
R.B. Everett & Company had operated from its Harrisburg location in Houston since 1911. The company moved to its new location at 8211 Red Bluff Road, Pasadena, Texas in March 2001. The new facility is located on 11 acres and includes a separate brick corporate office for administrative, sales, rental and accounting personnel. Parts and Service departments are adjacent to the executive offices connected by a covered parking area. Located four minutes from Beltway 8, the new location gives quick access for customers and a speedy delivery to all job sites.
In the fall of 2010 R.B. Everett opened a rental store in the city of Arlington, Texas. It wasn’t long after that their reputation allowed for expansion into a full equipment dealership. In the fall of 2011 construction was started on a permanent facility just north east of Fort Worth in Haltom City, with a completion date set for mid April.
